Music score elicits neuronal activation in the temporal region

چکیده
Effects of long-period musical training from childhood on the brain have been studied psychologically [1], anatomically [2], and functionally [36]. Absolute pitch, which is the ability to identify the note of a tone without any reference, is one of the most outstanding results of musical training. It seems that possessors of the absolute pitch have a memory of musical pitch in their brain. A PET study on musicians reported the brain regions, which were activated by musical tone-interval judgment task [7]. To our knowledge, there is no report on the time course of the brain activation during pitch recalling. On the other hand, some absolute pitch possessors claimed that they need help of the name of the tone when they sing a song with correct pitch. Such internal experience suggests a relationship between the memory of pitch and language. In this study, we investigated the neural activities while absolute pitch possessors recalled the pitch memory by MEG that has high spatio-temporal resolution.

Investigating the Effect of Music on Spatial Learning in a Virtual Reality Task
Background: Spatial learning and navigation is a fundamental cognitive ability consisting of multiple cognitive components. Despite intensive efforts conducted with the assistance of virtual reality technology and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) modality, the music effect on this cognition and the involved neuronal mechanisms remain elusive. Objectives: We aimed to investigate the...
متن کاملDecoding temporal structure in music and speech relies on shared brain resources but elicits different fine-scale spatial patterns.
Music and speech are complex sound streams with hierarchical rules of temporal organization that become elaborated over time. Here, we use functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure brain activity patterns in 20 right-handed nonmusicians as they listened to natural and temporally reordered musical and speech stimuli matched for familiarity, emotion, and valence. Heart rate variability and...
متن کاملFunctional Brain Response to Emotional Muical Stimuli in Depression, Using INLA Approach for Approximate Bayesian Inference
Introduction: One of the vital skills which has an impact on emotional health and well-being is the regulation of emotions. In recent years, the neural basis of this process has been considered widely. One of the powerful tools for eliciting and regulating emotion is music. The Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC) is part of the emotional neural circuitry involved in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)....
متن کاملLanguage, Music, and Brain
Introduction: Over the last centuries, scientists have been trying to figure out how the brain is learning the language. By 1980, the study of brain-language relationships was based on the study of human brain damage. But since 1980, neuroscience methods have greatly improved. There is controversy about where music, composition, or the perception of language and music are in the brain, or wheth...
متن کاملDifferential parietal and temporal contributions to music perception in improvising and score-dependent musicians, an fMRI study
Using fMRI, cerebral activations were studied in 24 classically-trained keyboard performers and 12 musically unskilled control subjects. Two groups of musicians were recruited: improvising (n=12) and score-dependent (non-improvising) musicians (n=12). While listening to both familiar and unfamiliar music, subjects either (covertly) appraised the presented music performance or imagined they were...
